Omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs are necessary for the normal functioning of every cell, tissue, gland and organ. Since the body cannot make EFAs on its own, they must come from foods or dietary supplements.
Because omega-6s are found in a wide variety of foods, most people consume adequate amounts of this essential fatty acid. In fact, many people overindulge in foods that contain omega-6s. These items include polyunsaturated vegetable oils made from safflower, sunflower, soybean, sesame, pumpkin, wheat germ, corn, cottonseed, walnut and wheat germ. Seeds and nuts are rich in omega-6s and so are most meats, fast foods and snack foods.
Omega-3s are more likely to be lacking in the average person’s diet, because there are relatively few foods that contain these important foundational fats. Dietary sources include oils from fish as well as some plants and nuts. Omega-3s are found in oil from halibut, salmon, sardines, mackerel and tuna. Vegetable oils, such as soybean, olive, canola and flax seed contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid.
Flax oil is one of the richest sources of omega-3s. It is also less expensive and does not contain environmental toxins as is often the case with fish.
